What happens to their care when you PCS

A decision for the move — not another insurance form, and not a promise we can follow you to the next state.

  • Licensed clinicians
  • Virtual care across California
  • Free consultation

If your teen is in immediate danger

Call 911 for medical emergencies. Call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Virtual IOP and outpatient care are not emergency services — reach emergency help first, then contact us when your teen is safe for non-emergency clinical support.

Before the truck

TRICARE moves. California licensing does not.

At Mental Health For Teens, a PCS is a qualifying life event. Update DEERS, do not drop the plan on the way, and call the contractor. If they leave California, we stop — our clinicians can only see a teen who is physically in this state during the session.

  1. 01Do not disenroll before you move
  2. 02You have 90 days after the address change
  3. 03We cannot follow them out of California

Arriving in California
Pendleton, Miramar, Naval Base, or anywhere in-state. Start the benefits check now — do not wait until the truck is empty.
Staying in California
Orders to another CA base, or the teen stays while the sponsor goes. Care can continue if they are still in California for sessions.
Leaving California
We cannot keep the Zoom. Get records, keep the current plan until you arrive, then DEERS and a new-state provider.

In order

Do this before the household goods leave

The plan can travel. The Zoom session cannot leave California.

  1. Say out loud whether they will still be in California

If they will sit in a California room for sessions — another CA duty station, or they stay with a parent here — we can keep mapping care. If the next address is out of state, we cannot continue. That is our license line, not a TRICARE rule.

    MHFT
  2. If they are leaving, get the records before the truck

TRICARE’s PCS guidance: ask current civilian providers for copies of records, and talk through ongoing issues before you move. Do not assume the next MTF or contractor will pull the chart in week one.

    TRICARE PCS tips
  3. Do not drop the plan on the way — then update DEERS

A move is a Qualifying Life Event. Official guidance: do not disenroll before you leave — the current plan covers you on the road. After you arrive, update the address in DEERS (milConnect, phone, or an ID card office). Plan changes start after DEERS shows the new address. DEERS does not transfer enrollment by itself.

    TRICARE QLE
  4. Call the contractor — then, if they are in California, verify with us

Call the regional contractor and give the new address. West is currently 1-888-874-9378 (TriWest). Prime families in a Prime Service Area choose a new PCM. Select families do not. Then we can check whether virtual IOP or outpatient is even an option on this plan — we do not guess.

The call

What to tell TriWest — and what to pack for the next counselor

One phone call and one folder. Do not wait until the first week at the new school.

  1. 01We have a PCS. I need my teen’s mental health coverage to stay in place through the move.
  2. 02I have updated — or I am updating — DEERS with the new address. Do not drop us for an old address.
  3. 03They are a dependent, not the service member. What referral or pre-authorization do we need for outpatient therapy, and what do we need for intensive outpatient?
  4. 04If we are arriving in California: who is the West contractor contact, and is this a Prime Service Area?
  5. 05If we are leaving California: how do I transfer enrollment to the new region, and who finds the next network clinician?
  6. 06If they were admitted, I will call you within 24 hours or the next business day.

What people say — and what to do instead

None of these is a transfer of care. Pick a door, then call the contractor.

What you may hear

  • “We’ll just keep the same Zoom therapist after Texas.” Not with us — the teen has to be in California.
  • “TRICARE covers everything.” Prime, Select, network, and specialty rules are different. IOP is not a routine visit.
  • “I’ll wait until we unpack.” The 90-day clock starts at the address change. An old DEERS address can get you dropped.
  • “Drop Prime now so we don’t pay twice.” Official guidance: do not disenroll before you move.
  • “The new MTF will pick them up next Monday.” Prime PCM choice and wait times are not a first-period plan.

What to do instead

  • If they stay in California: keep the current schedule and send us the new address so we can verify the plan.
  • If they leave: ask the current clinician for records this week, then we close when they leave the state.
  • Call TriWest with the new address after DEERS updates — 1-888-874-9378 for West.
  • Update DEERS first. Then change the plan, if you need to, inside 90 days.
  • If they cannot stay safe on the road: 911 or 988 (press 1). Tell the contractor the next day if they are admitted.
The facts

Six things the pack-out list skips

If you only keep two: do not drop the plan on the highway, and we cannot treat a teen who is no longer in California.

A PCS is a 90-day qualifying life event

TRICARE: a move lets family members enroll or change plans. You have 90 days from the date of the address change. Use the Plan Finder for the new duty station — Prime is not available everywhere.

DEERS first. Enrollment is a second step.

Update the address in DEERS via milConnect, by phone, or at an ID card office. Official tip: if you do not, you can have trouble getting care — or be disenrolled. DEERS does not transfer the TRICARE enrollment by itself. Call the contractor after.

Keep the current plan until you arrive

TRICARE’s moving Q&A: do not disenroll before you leave. The current plan is meant to cover you on the way. After you arrive, Prime families in a Prime Service Area pick a new PCM. Select families do not.

Dependents and active-duty rules are not the same

TRICARE newsroom (2025): active-duty members start at a military hospital or clinic; civilian care needs a referral and pre-authorization. Other Prime beneficiaries: no referral for a network outpatient mental health visit; more than basic outpatient may need one. Select: any authorized provider, no referral — lower cost in-network. Specialty care may still need pre-authorization.

Virtual care uses the same referral rules as in-person

TRICARE: virtual mental health has the same referral and pre-authorization requirements as the office. West lists civilian telemental options through the regional contractor — that list is not the same thing as our program, and it does not waive California licensing.

We verify. We do not promise TRICARE will pay.

Mental Health For Teens is virtual IOP and outpatient for California teens ages 12–17. Coverage varies by Prime vs Select, network status, and whether IOP needs authorization. We check before anyone enrolls. We cannot replace 911, 988, or an MTF.

Level of care

When we can help — and when the move owns the week

Virtual IOP is scheduled care in a California room. It is not a travel clinic, and it is not the ER on I-10.

Step 1 · Emergency first

Call 911 or 988 when

  • A plan or intent to attempt suicide — on the road or after you arrive
  • They cannot stay safe in temporary lodging
  • An admission — then call the contractor within 24 hours or the next business day
  • You need 988, press 1, or 911 — not a benefits check
After immediate safety is addressed

Step 2 · Structured support

Virtual IOP or outpatient may fit when

  • 01They will be physically in California for sessions
  • 02They are stable enough for scheduled video
  • 03You can send plan type, sponsor branch, and the DoD ID for a benefits check
  • 04A clinician has cleared outpatient-level intensity — IOP is not assumed

Step 3 · When clinically appropriate

A PCS packet is not an authorization.

If they are in California and safe enough for scheduled care, we can verify TRICARE and map virtual IOP or outpatient. If they are leaving the state, we help you close and hand off records. Confirm coverage with TriWest or your contractor — this is not legal advice.

No. Sessions are for teens who are physically in California. If the next home is another state, we close and help you hand off records. TRICARE may still cover a new authorized provider there — that is a contractor question, not ours.

Before the truck, if you can. Bring plan type (Prime or Select), sponsor branch, and the teen’s DEERS status. We verify TRICARE before anyone enrolls. Do not assume we are in-network.

TRICARE covers mental health services that include intensive outpatient programs, and virtual visits follow the same referral and pre-authorization rules as in-person care. Whether this program is payable on your plan is a contractor and authorization question. We verify. This is not a coverage promise.

It depends who they are on the plan. Active-duty members start at a military hospital or clinic and need a referral for civilian care. Other Prime beneficiaries: no referral for a network outpatient mental health visit; more than basic outpatient may need one. Select: no referral for an authorized provider. Confirm with TriWest. This is not legal advice.

A PCS is a Qualifying Life Event. TRICARE: you have 90 days from the date of the address change to change plans. Update DEERS first. Do not disenroll before you move.

Eligibility depends on the member’s duty status. TRICARE: more than 30 days on active-duty orders follows active-duty rules; 30 days or less may be Reserve Select. Check milConnect and the unit personnel office. We still only treat teens in California.

No. It cites TRICARE newsroom guidance on mental health access, virtual care, and moving / qualifying life events. Contractors, Prime Service Areas, and Evidence of Coverage language change. Confirm with DEERS, TriWest or your regional contractor, and your PCM.

If they will be in California, verify the plan before the truck
